The Evolution of Gambling Disorder

As recent as 2013 Problem Gambling will be looked at in a different light in healthcare. When you are given a diagnosis today it is likely that the person in the clinic making the diagnosis referred to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th Edition, 2013 (DSM V). Problem Gambling has moved from being seen as an impulse control disorder to an addiction disorder. Impulse control disorders include such diagnoses as Kleptomania (compulsion to steal) and Compulsive Hair Pulling (Trichotillamania).  Gambling is now thought of on a continuum rather than discrete terms such as "pathological" or "compulsive", and is referred to as gambling disorders.
